A re-design of BMW 6 series is going to hit the market this May. The series that re-appeared in 2004 has got another tweaked member added to its family this year.
The car having somewhat similar figures to the 5 and 7 series sedans, carries a tad bit 3″ longer wheelbase and 2.6″ longer, 1.6″ wider than the pre-mentioned cars. It’s convertible top has flared C-pillars, between which there is power operated rear glass. The top can also be moved higher or lower as long as the car is moving below 25mph. However a bit of bad thing about this design of top is that it hinders some of the driver view.
The 4.8litre naturally aspirated V8 engine has been replaced by twin-turbo N63 4.4-litre engine, so effectively some fuel saving is expected. The turbocharger makes it possible to have 400 hp (instead of 360hp with naturally aspirated) and a torque of 450 lb-ft (with naturally aspirated, it was 360 lb-ft). However the drivetrain response wont thrill you as you wont feel the difference of having a turbocharger under the skin of the car. The acceleration from 0-60 mph is in 4.9s, only 0.5s better than previous 650i. Reason ? The car is quite heavier than previous one ! 250 pounds heavier than older 650i.
With the engine is eight-speed automatic transmission. For North American customers, the option of having a manual transmission is available. Previous 650i had 6-speed automatic transmission but with 8-ratios available, fuel will definitely be used in economy.
Driving & Control
The car comes with BMW Driving Dyamics Control Features with for modes namely:
- Comfort
- Normal
- Sport
- Sport+
The first three modes change throttle & automatic transmission mappings, roll stabilization, dampers & steering effort required to turn the steering wheel. The Sport+ mode is quite similar to Sport but with extra power-steering option available
The steerable rear axle allows the car to have a turning radius of 3feet. The active roll stabilization allows fighting the body lean during cornering without affecting damper stiffness
Interior
The dashboard has 4-gauges & a 10.1″ display for standard navigation. The trans-reflective technology improves visibility of screen in sunlight
