Arctic Whisper – A Fast Charging Hybrid Electric Bus by Opbrid

Spanish Engineering Firm “Opbrid” has just delivered a new and unique diesel-electric hybrid bus “Arctic Whisper” that charges really fast and makes little noise which is from where it got its name “Arctic Whisper”.

The concept behind the bus is quite unique. Instead of being on standstill for a full re-charge, bus gets short sessions of charging at bus stops. Although an overnight full recharge is needed prior to the running day and these recharge sessions just let it keep going for another 18 hours.

When the bus docks at the bus stop, driver pushes a button that raises the charging plug to a charging bar which then keeps it giving the electric power as much as it can before the bus kicks off for next destination.

The diesel generator is employed with the drivetrain for situations where the journey is longer than 18 hours and the stops aren’t that frequent. The generator runs an alternator which produces and stores electric energy in batteries to be used by the bus motors in wheels.

The bus is running in Umea, Sweden with the travelers reasonably happy with the concept. The comfort level is great as the passengers do not get shook during ride because the bus doesn’t have gears. And moreover, it’s as silent as a whisper, as its name implies.

The bus can overall be extremely economical in countries where the sources of electric power generation are cheap and alternative ones rather than coal-fired plants or oil-fired ones.
