New System By Volvo To Avoid Pedestrian-Car Accidents

Swedish car manufacturer Volvo has made this its aim that by 2020, none of their cars will kill anyone. In a bid to achieve this perfection, they have designed a detection systems that senses if a pedestrian or other car is on course of collision with your car and brakes automatically, saving lives.

The Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection system fitted in the 2011 model S60 was first announced early last year. It uses a computer fed by information from a wide-angle radar system that detects objects and monitors their speed and distance from the car, and from a camera fitted near the rear view mirror. Using this information the computer identifies the objects and determines if they are on a collision path.
In case of a possible collision, audible and visual warnings are issued to the driver and the computer itself brakes hard in case it feels the driver hasn’t reacted to the warning.

Testing
The system was tested with a dummy statue but the test wasn’t perfect since the car continued to hit the dummy even at 35 km/h. The reason given for this was the presence of crowd around which confused the computer. This definitely needs more work and Artificial Intelligence people can definitely help out.

Alerting the distracted and careless driver
Another system in the same car triggers an alarm in case the car abruptly weaves around. In case of vehicles around that drivers cannot see, lights in the mirror turn on to warn the driver. One system detects the change of lane without giving indicator.

All these systems are reportedly NOT the first of their kind since Mercedes Benz and BMW have already developed such systems but Volvo’s system features automatic braking which was absent in previously mentioned cars.
